Chapter Seventeen

“YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS, Josh. Angels don’t just show up like that!”

“Maybe not, but it’s the guy in my sketch. There’s no doubt about it.”

“Just when I think that things are going back to a normal relationship, you spring something like this on me! Please don’t do that. I trust you, but this could change everything.”

She sat in the model’s chair, and Josh leaned his back against the wall.

“I had to tell you. Not telling you would be lying to you. Please, hang in there with me. I promise to be open and frank, and true. If you don’t like me this way, you can choose to say so. You said you say what’s on your mind, and I do the same. I’m truthful, but you’ll have to come to that conclusion on your own. And talking to your dad sounds like a good plan.”

They both remained silent. Not even Max stirred, only looking at the two of them from where he lay.

Elizabeth broke the silence. “I might as well tell you this, I’ve prayed for you since you showed up. I wouldn’t be surprised if my dad has too, but maybe for different reasons. My mom, too, for that matter.”

“Cyndi Marlboro said I should get used to people praying for me. I didn’t take her too seriously, but I guess she was right. Do angels usually show up when you pray?”

“This would be the first. At least as far as I know.”

“What’s that supposed to mean? Angels show up without you knowing? Trust me, if this guy Arnon had shown up, you would remember him.”

“No wings and no halo.”

“Right. He just appears out of nowhere and vanishes into I don’t know where. He used the door last time he came.”

“No car?”

“Nope”

“You saw him walking away? Where did he go?”

“No, I didn’t see him leave the property. He went out of the door and vanished before I could see where he went. And no, he didn’t bring a car or come in a taxi. I would have heard either. It’s quiet out here.”

“I believe that you believe it, but I’m stunned.”

“And besides that, as I said, he knows stuff—not just facts, but he implies he knows the purposes and meaning of things. He says I was meant to be here, but that I have a choice to walk away if I want.”

“Please don’t.” She stepped close to him and placed her hands on his shoulders. “Are you scared?”

“Yes, I was at first. I’m sure Arnon doesn’t intend any harm, and I don’t want to leave. I don’t want to leave you.” He kissed her on the forehead.

She wrapped her arms around him and held him. The warmth of her up against him was overwhelming. Elizabeth turned her face up to him as Josh bent his head and kissed her on the lips. She returned the kiss holding him tighter. Her kiss was more wonderful than anything he could have anticipated. Her lips were softer and more inviting than he’d ever imagined possible.
